Dec 30, 2016 - Jan 2, 2017

The famcamp was easy to find. Has nice LONG concrete pull-thrus with full hookups and cable for $25/night. There is no wifi, but our Verizon service had 4 bars to utilize our own internet. We were told there is free laundry over at the Inn, but we didn't use it. We stayed here over the New Year's weekend which ment the park was quiet (no planes flying), nice & secure. It also ment the MWR was closed; we were glad we had reservations with our site # & had already paid because the hosts were no where to be found to pay for the site. Commissary was small but well stocked and very friendly. Nice little base on the way to/from Big Bend National Park if you don't need a lot of amenities.

Dec 21-26, 2016

We tried calling for reservations a couple of days ahead but there was no answer and no answering machine. Finally got thru the day befor we wanted to be there. They did not tell us that they were on a holiday schedule and their office was only open from 10-1. An e-mail confirmation/receipt was supposed to be mailed but never was. We got there at 1:15 and fortunately, the girl there got our paperwork with our assigned site. She said if we had any questions to contact the camp host. (There was a sign at a spot, but no one there the whole time.) She tried to print out a receipt, but the printer was out of ink. The next day, we went back for a receipt and again, printer out of ink, so he e-mailed it. This time we got it. He gave us the information on the base, etc. There is no restroom/shower, or laundry but we found out we could do laundry at the Air Force Inn. It was free. The posted price was $18 but the price had gone up to $25. I would like to give ratings about 2 1/2 . Location, very little in Del Rio. Cleanliness/hospitality, grounds were clean but hospitality left a lot to be desired. Amenities/facilities, no restroom/shower, laundry not at campground, no wi-fi. The sites are long and level. Value, for the previous $18 it would have been fine but for $25, not really worth it. Overall experience, could have been better. Very noisy with training but that is to be expected. Pet cleanup was not enforced. Watched a man walking two big dogs behind us an he didn't clean up after them.

March 2015

G.T. left this review: On arrival we found the MAIN GATE CLOSED with no turnaround to be had on the 2 lane road. So we started our stay with an unhooking the toad and back/fill exercise. We found this was done for construction starting mid-Feb BUT neither of us saw any signs of this on 90 coming in from the east (a banner indicating closed across the exit sign comes to mind as something useful). So we could have missed something, BUT I had called outdoor rec to check site availability a couple of hours out and were told sure --- come ahead, with nothing said about the gate. Its supposed to be closed til mid April but you know how that goes - call first and ask specifically about the gate. In the meantime take 79 south to the first exit and head to the West Gate. Ok entering, concrete barriers in the exit lane are a bit tight for big rigs but doable. The individual I spoke to on the phone at outdoor rec wasn't there when we registered but I spoke to the manager. Unfortunately, I got the impression he didn't think my issue was of much significance. ICE time. Otherwise the FAMCAMP itself is as described previously - nice level concrete pads. Basic hookups. No amenities such as wifi or laundry. Limited dining and shopping options. Nice large fitness facility and library tho.

December 2014

Stopped here for 2 nights. Personnel in MWR office inside BX mall for check-in. This is a very small base but has a nice commissary/BX. The camp is well located. Yes, there will be jet noise, it's a training base! But AF people love hearing them right? Right! Access off the highway is easy and straight back to the camp, nice partitions between sites and a lovely park next door. No laundry, bathrooms/showers are basic but very clean. Lots of TDY personnel here as it's a training base. No wifi and we used our Tailgater satellite system so cannot speak to TV reception. The dog loved the walking trails. Del Rio is interesting to explore, very old town with great architecture in the old parts, just be careful which bridges you cross if you don't want to end up in Mexico! ;-)

R.F. left this review using the Directory software: - A very good stop off point along US-90 / US-277 to avoid having to travel I-10 across west Texas. Clean, efficient. New cable TV being installed. Nice sound barriers between sites. Yes, the flight line/ runway is located less than a half-mile from the FamCamp. You can hear the planes, and the students are flying by 8 am and til 8 pm.

We were passing through and stayed here for one night. Pros: well groomed facility; layout was pretty simple and basic; sufficient pull-through sites with full hookups; within easy walking distance of the BX, a Subway, and Outdoor Rec where you pay. A little further up the road is the AF Inn which has a "business center" where one can check e-mails; great deal for $18 a night. Cons: no WiFi available at the campsite, no place to do laundry near the campsite.

May 7 to May 13, 2014

If your goal is to be in West Texas, this is a great place to stay. Good value - $100 for a week. Check in and Outdoor Rec is in the PX. Close enough to Lake Amistad for day trip and the Visitors Center has lots of information and films to see. Not a lot to do in Del Rio but we had a recommendation from a local for Poncho's Restaurant - great Mexican food and very reasonable prices. Facilities on base are adequate but no restrooms, showers or laundry in the FamCamp area.

December 23, 2013

Stopped for an overnight stay. There were 5 empty sites. 10 on left are reservable, 10 on right are first come first serve. Did not see camphost, appears to maybe be some homesteaders, three or four, however sites are clean and not junked up. 4 sites with FEMA trailers as rentals, camphost on a site, and homesteaders. That leaves about 10 sites for RVers. We enjoyed the quaint atmosphere of the campground. Sites are fairly level some sloping but not bad, concrete pads, nicely spaced, and have privacy fence between sites. BX one block away, didn't go in. Did not use the restroom facilities located at the playground area not far from campground. The whole base appeared very clean and remodeled with mostly newer buildings. Nice place to stop and we would consider staying for a week or two just to relax. Price is now $18 a night, not sure of weekly rate.

July 2013

Visited my wife who PCSd there in June. Easy to get to off the highway - just turn into the base and go straight. Being in this part of the country one expects barren land and spartan conditions. This FamCamp has more than most FamCamps or RV parks in the military and was a nice surprise considering the location (in the middle of no-where Texas)! It was clean, the camp host were pleasant and those who were there were very friendly. There are a few folks who stay at the FamCamp who are stationed there but not too many. Besides, sometimes with split families such as ours (one PCSd and the other at home) it is a nice and proper way to live. Wished my wife took the RV and lived there instead of paying 2 places to live. Those who complain about "long-termers" might need to reconsider their harsh comments. You get what you pay for and as far as I'm concerned, the military camps are the cheapest for the price with a good value. I have no problem with "long-termers" at the military campground as long as they are keeping the place clean and there are at least 50% of the spaces open for visitors. Hey, it's a money maker for MWR, just keep the spaces clean and not have any porches built with Pink Flamingos in the yard.

Aug 31 - Sept 12, 13

When I called about making a reservation, I requested a specific site and was told that that side of the FamCamp was reserved for long term stays only. So I was given a site on the other side of the FamCamp. That particular side of the campground has 5 spaces facing the wrong way (the porch side receives the afternoon sun). There are also 5 "FEMA-type" trailers that can be rented by the month only. There is no wi-fi in the campground, so one has to go to the library in order to access the internet. The campground is adjacent to a picnic/playground area. The flight line is on the other side of the picnic/playground area, so the campground tends to be noisy.

January 2013

Couldn't be easier to get to, turn left off US90 at the base and go til the road ends. Wonderful sites, could hold 2 rigs lengthwise although they might have put the hookups another foot or so away from the pad. I couldn't fully open a couple of storage doors. One of the nicest bases I've been on. Small, not a high level of activity around but for the flights, of course. But mostly adequate facilities. Commissary, library and gym are very good for the size of installation. BX is ok, dining options are very limited, the BX now has a Subway which I guess replaced the Burger King. We'll definitely keep it in mind on our south Texas explorations.

This has always been one of our favorite stops until this time. NO LAUNDRY FACILITIES AT ALL! Must drive 8 miles into Del Rio to the only laundromat in town. Other than this problem, the other base facilities are adequate, personnel friendly and base very clean.

24-26 April 2012

We arrived late in the afternoon with a reservation. It's a good thing, the park is full of homesteaders. It's a nice park, fully pave spots, with privacy fences between spots. Big drawback is the lack of dining options at the BX. The just have Burger King and the BX is small for the size of the base, as is the commissary. Apart from stopping here on the way east, there isn't any reason to stay here. It's too bad because this has the makings of a top notch RV park.

Jan 2011-March 1 2011

I really enjoyed my stay here. Commissary was super, well stocked for such a small facility, however aafes needs to wake up and smell the coffee, or a lack of. Eating establishments on base rank somewhere between 5 and 0 on a scale of 1 to 10. it's not the quality of the food so much as it is a place to find it. The laundry facility went on the blink for some unknown reason while i was there and it seemed that no one was in a earth shattering mood to fix it. Laundry mats in del rio suck. I would gladly pay to do laundry in a aafes laundry facility if one were provided, at least most of them are clean and the machines are kept in a operating condition. I have never met up face to face with a rattle snake, but i am nearly certain some of them are probably friendlier then the camp host, the staff at the outdoor rec office, and the staff at the auto craft shop.

K.C. left this review using the Directory software: First time at the campground but not my last. The camp host was very friendly and helpful. The sites were clean, paved and long. Bathrooms are just outside the campground at the playground with showers at the fitness center down the road. The exchange is one block from the campground and there is WiFi in the coffee shop. The sites are full hook-up with cable. Security makes the rounds every few hours. There is a railroad nearby but the sounds are not too loud. Flight ops seem to end by 1900. The only downside is there are several homesteaders that are not active duty or students but retired personnel who work at the base. If this policy of not enforcing the stay rules continue to be ignored than a great FamCamp will not be available to the traveling community.

S.K. left this review using the Directory software: Due to the cold weather we had no water when we arrived but it was fixed the next day. No laundry and it's the lowest priority. AF Inn allowed me to do 2 loads one day. One laundromat in town. No diesel fuel on base, not much to do, commissary small but very good, BX is small with very little in merchandise.

Oct 15 - Nov 18, 2010

I spent mid Oct to mid Nov and totally enjoyed my stay. The city of Del Rio has many great places to visit and some very good food. If you want a great steak try Lorina's Cantina every Wednesday (RSVP Only) also Wrights Steak House, both on the West side of Del Rio US-90. The only area I addressed with the base was the need to get WiFi installed, I have Sprint and it worked great but WiFi is now and the future. Full hookups, and you have a fence on each side to give you a comfortable sense of privacy. Everything on the base that you need is close, The site are long and can handle any size RV with trailer/puller. There is a 60 day limit stay and I will come here again.

April 8 - April 11, 2010

We enjoyed our stay here, and would stay here again if we ever have the chance. Once you get over the fact that campground feels unusual without a bathhouse or other public facility, you realize how nice it is. The sites are very comfortable. The are level, full hookups, and you have a fence on each side to give you a comfortable sense of privacy. Everything on the base that you need is close, and you learn to take that in as part of the camping facility experience. The BX is next door, restrooms are there to use. The gym, a first class physical fitness center, has great showers in the locker room that a camper can use. The sites have full hookups, but if you don't want or can't use your RV shower, then you can go to the gym. It is within a mile of the campground. Besides the excellent exercise equipment, the gym has a coffee shop and wifi to use. There is also wifi available at the lodging office lobby about a block away. The laundry for the famcamp is, unusually, located across from the gym. However, the washer and dryers are free and very new. By our second day here we had worked out our routine so that we learned to get around the base, even by walking, to enjoy the experience. Not a bad place at all. It would be made perfect if a full bathhouse and lodge room could be built on site.
