From I-37 take exit 4-A south onto TX-358 east. While on 358 you will see signs for the NAS-CCAD Base. Stay on TX-358 / South Padre Island Drive and watch for the exit for NAS-CCAD , which is just prior to the causeway crossing over to Padre Island. That exit is a flyover across the highway that puts you directly onto NAS Drive and straight on to the Main Gate. In the event you do miss that exit, in 1/4 mile you can take the Walton Drive exit, turn left at the end of it and follow that road a short way until it merges onto NAS Drive and on to the Main Gate. When entering the NAS through the Main Gate, NAS Drive becomes Lexington Blvd. Continue straight on Lexington. At the 2nd stop sign, which is at the ocean, turn right onto Ocean Drive. Follow it almost to the end and you will see a sign for a right turn to take you to the Marina where you check in with Outdoor Rec.

11-14 May 2018

Nice campground, no shade and very windy (you are on the gulf coast). Campsites are minimal but adequate. 30/50 amp, water and dump. Do not let them fool you. There are no "pull-through" sites. A pull-through requires you to pull straight in and onto landscaped areas. Bring your own BBQ. Nice for a weekend stay but no longer. Easy access to the Exchange and Commissary. No on-site manager after hours. Saw quite a few homesteaders, even one in a home-made rig. WiFi was available but spotty at times, but not a show stopper.

Apr 22-23, 2018

We stayed 4 nights with a 22' trailer. We needed only 30amp connection. They have a small number of asphalt, 30amp connections for a good rate of $17. These 30amp sites. with full hook-ups, are the furtherest from the shower house and washeteria. The 50amp sites with larger concrete parking spots are $20. Check-in staff at the marina were very nice and professional. Shower House/Washeteria was always clean -- good daily maintenance. It was very windy every day we were here -- about 15 - 20 mph, plus gusts. No one could put their awnings out, and I didn't see anyone cooking outdoors or lounging outside their RV. There are no trees to shelter you from sun or wind. Temp was okay, mid to upper 70's but still no comfortable outdoor activity. There was still visible damage around from Hurricane Harvey. There used to be a nice fishing pier by the campground that was damaged and now not useable. Various buildings on base had roof damage and some activities have moved or are being repaired. Both the Commissary and NEX are small but adequate. We bought a few items at the Commissary, but the nearby off base HEB, Walmart, etc. are better stocked and and in many cases cheaper by a few cents. More and more it seems like the on base facilities aren't really doing a service to our troops anymore when compared to off-base providers. Campground has a modest recreation room with kitchen, tv, and tables to play games. Couches for TV viewing weren't too comfortable. It did not seem to be used very much. Several residents may be permanent party, homesteaders, etc. Some RVs were parked on sites and never seemed to have any occupants -- like they are stored there.

Feb. 2018

We stayed in a back-in site that was concrete with a nice size patio/parking area. Our site was at the park entrance so was further way from the water. With the wind and fog I dont know I would want to be any closer to the water. We have a 42’ 5th wheel and had to put our back stabilizers down in the grass, so it would have been nice to have a pad about 10’ longer! Park is very clean and quiet. Plenty of room to walk the dog and ride your bike. Free wi-fi, no cable ( but satellite work great), picnic table, free laundry. Base has a small commissary and exchange. Great location to visit Padre Island and the USS Lexington. Sites and entire park is so spacious….lots of open areas.

We could not get a reservation here. Tried about a month out, no luck. Tried a day out, no luck. We ended up staying about 1 mile down the road. We did visit the RV Park just to see what we were missing :( The park was nice, spaces were large, and the pads were all concrete. It is nice and close to the water. The Laundry and restroom buildings look nice but I didn't stop and go in them. Looks like a really nice place to stay, I would absolutely try to stay here again.

14- 16 Dec 2017

Had a short stay to see the Lady Lex and the Texas State Aquarium. Weather was crappy and had to stay one extra night. The staff was very helpful and made it a non issue. I must say the staff this visit was light years better than the staff a few years ago. we had a LONG pull through site, which made it great for our over 65 foot set up. only drawback was the guy next to us was not active duty, a veteran or DOD. He was a civilian and he looked like he had homesteaded. I mentioned this to the staff and he cleaned up his site overall great time was had by all.

Oct 31 -Nov 7 2017

Just checked in at Corpus Christi FamCamp. They told me as of Oct 1 2017 all sites are now $20. I made reservations in May 2017 for $18 and I said I have confirmation for $18 so they gave it to me at $18 instead of $20. The only thing I can tell is so far the wifi is good for emails. Site is concrete and flat. Office staff makes check-in very long and difficult. Friend had 4 people in front of him and it took an hour to check-in. When I checked it I was the only one and it took 15 minutes and the issue was the printer and the computers they have.

If you love wet, warm and windy weather, this is the park for you. Superb windsurfing conditions. Reservations recommended; many active duty and retirees living here full time. Length of stay is 90 days. Submit a written request to extend. Spoke to one person who had been here since March of 2017 and was staying until the end of July. Following information from MWR Management: Repair work on the fishing pier has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2017. Future park improvements in the planning stages are: A dog park with large and small designated sections and a run. Children’s play area. RV Park expansion to include cottages. Park Appearance: mowed. Trash picked up routinely. Concrete RV pads old and cracking. Utility boxes old. Women’s Shower/Toilets: Needs cleaning and painting. Laundry free. Large top load commercial Speed Queen washers and dryers in good repair. Commissary small. Meat and produce selection small and poor quality. Highly recommend Moody’s Meat Market. GOWIFI – Connectivity strong.

January 5-21, 2017

This is a great RV park in that they have nice large sites, big rig friendly, 50 amp service w/full HU, free (clean) laundry on a secure military installation. We could see the water nicely from our site. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Folks seem to stay here a long time and we were lucky to be able to get a reservation and stay for 16 days. (unable to extend). I only downgrade the location and overall experience for the following reasons - You are not on the Gulf per-se, and the piers are unable to be used at all. No "beach". You also get a LOT of salt spray/fog overnight and our bikes are trashed after being out for 16 days (we should have known and taken precautions). I also downgrade because folks seem to have left their RVs there during winter months and only come and go - preventing the sites from being rented by those who would actually like to BE there. I realize they are paying for them, but I don't like the not having to be occupied part. (They can't be left for more than 48 hours during hurricane season). I would recommend this park for anyone wanting a secure location with FHU in the CC area. Can't beat the price.

We travel extensively and stay in military campground when we can -- I would rate NAS Corpus Christi as the best we have experienced. The price is economical -- $18.00 for 50a service, free laundry room with several washers and dryers, lawn maintenance keeps the grass cut each week and limbs, etc. cleaned up. The MWR personnel are friendly and helpful -- no one bothers you and the RV sites are far enough apart so as to afford some degree of privacy. All in all hard to beat. The salt spray from the bay during high winds, which are frequent, makes constant cleanup of the RV and vehicles a good idea.

August 2016

Before I get started I would like to say the only thing They could do better is offer a monthly rate, like most others do. Just down the road is Kingsville NAS. Its smaller but it is $18 a night but monthly $360, Here it's $18 a night and $540 a month. I read "Meseahunt" and he nailed it on the gate and the gas station. The laundry, showers, and restrooms are the cleanest I have been around. Padre Island is less than 3 miles away and the beaches there are Great. I can see the beach from my RV as I type this. The camp sites are broken down into two places. The first place is all grass spots next to the outdoor rec building. This is the Old grounds and it has one building for laundry (2 washers/dryers) , bathrooms (1 for each), and TV room with small TV and Kitchen chairs to sit in. The other is next to the pier and are all concrete back in spots with good water pressure, 30/50 amp service, and sewer. This side has a laundry mat of 6 washers and dryers (free) and bathroom/showers and a second building which is the community center, with bathrooms( 1 for each), TV, table soccer, kitchen with large refrigerator and range. The park is clean and for the most part Dogs are under control. Love This Park.

Ok here goes; coming towards the main gate is a bit of a challenge because they have the concrete barriers soooo close together you barely have any maneuver room so if you don't pay attention you WILL hit the side/rear of your trailer, so be careful. Next we stopped for diesel at the fuel station which is directly after entering the main gate, lets just say you should not be in any hurry to fuel, it took me 20min to pump 18gal, I finally said it was time to go, for whatever reason the pressure/flow is very slow? Arrived on a Sunday, office is closed but my reservation paperwork was in the outside box and all was in order. Had a back-in site which was easy to access and for the most part the hard dirt/sand was level. Was in between a couple of full-timers and they were very congenial, as were all that we met. Laundry room was very close with two sets and were FREE. Park is quiet at night and most all are away during the day. My only real gripe(which is no fault of the site) is that the entire grass area has huge sharp stickers which your pet WILL get in the paws(as mine did) and they do hurt(both pet & owner). There is a PX and commissary so if you need some supplies they are just down the road :) Even though you are very near the bay there is really no beach area to walk, you have to go off-base to town. If we come back to this area we would stay again, after all who could complain for $18.....

5 July - 11 July 2016

We almost decided not to camp at NAS-CCAD due to the negative comments posted but glad we decided to check it out for ourselves. The Office Personnel are very sharp and are very willing to make sure your stay is pleasant. I have tremors and experienced a problem with our water heater plug, I was able to remove the plug with no problem but putting a new one back in became very hard to do with the tremors. Jesse (one of the Office personnel) volunteered to put it in for me! THANK YOU VERY MUCH SIR! The negative comments about how the campground looked and how people camping there must have been someone's bad dream. The campground is very well kept and people with pets did clean up after their pets (well 99% of them anyway). A retiree there by the name of Clinton does a fantastic job of mowing/trimming the campground. He also keeps a very close eye on the dumpsters and trash cans in the campground area. Keep up the good work! Only negative thing I could see was the fishing pier is still closed....and has been closed for quite some time. I heard the funds have been approved for the repairs, and now they are waiting for a contract to be signed. All in all, this campground, the people running it and taking care of it, makes it a perfect place to camp. We WILL return! :-)

We use a GPS but always rely on this website's directions for our final approach... we've found them a huge help. In this case, while the existing directions are good, I believe a bit of clarification is needed. There is a "flyover" off of 358 direct to the base, but also a "backup" exit if it's missed - Walton Drive. And our GPS missed the fact that the exit existed. So I'd re-write them as follows: From I-37 take exit 4-A south onto TX-358 east. As for the campground itself... it's a fine, clean, well maintained campground. We'd definitely stay here again. The negative reviews baffle me - we experienced none of the issues we read in these reviews. There are actually two RV areas here, in close proximity. We were routed to Area B on check in. Area A seems to be used more for longer term stays, personnel on TDY etc. Some additional items there on the sites, but nothing whatsoever out of line, ugly, or disturbing. Area B was great. All sites are Back In, with level concrete pads, with room for longer MH's or Trailers and space to park your vehicle on the pad beside your rig. And LOTS of well kept green space between you and your neighbors. Others have covered things so I'll only say we found the staff pleasant and helpful, the bathrooms clean, the free laundry wonderful, and the free Wifi solid without issues. You will need pet vaccination documentation. The water area is very nice and they are currently re-creating the natural environment on the waterfront. Negatives - we didn't feel they really were, you adapt - were no shade trees and constant, sometime STRONG winds. You are right on the water, you expect that. On occasion noted dog walkers not picking up after their pets. Have you ever been in a campground where there was not at least one jerk? We haven't. But we did not encounter a lot of droppings. As indicated, we'd certainly stay here again.

I've stayed here before and each time I return the famcamp gets progressively worse. This last visit was no exception. Tons of homesteaders. The park is being over taken with extreme long termers. Which is against the rules. Dog rules are not enforced. Dog crap all along the beach, on the road, on the walkways. It's disgusting. Mosquitos so thick there are times you can't even go outside. Heavy drinkers who break out into fist fights. Long termers calling the police on others. Theft is a huge problem. I had my fishing poles and coolers stolen while I was out running. My Netflix account was hacked and my password stolen. Diesel was stolen out of my truck. Someone is feeding the wildlife so the coyotes are hanging around. I was very disappointed that the pier has not been repaired in well over a year. Only upside is the management has been replaced. I'm hoping Chris can fix this place up, evict the long termers and enforce the rules. Wifi is terrible. Sites are large but you can't go outside and enjoy it. Pass this one by. Plenty of better places to spend your money.

Spent a week with some of the grandkids and we all had so much fun. From the pool to the beach, bowling on base, paddle boarding, and an awesome early Independence Day celebration at sunfish beach with all kinds of food and entertainment. Want to get away and have a peaceful yet entertaining time, this is it.

June 15, 2016

We just spent three days at Shields Park NAS Recreation Area and enjoyed it very much.  Nice and quiet, great location with access to all the base facilities as well as the City of Corpus Christi and the beach.  Had no problems and the staff was excellent.  Lots of space between sites and the grass was well maintained with no (well, very few) stickers.  Everything was well maintained and very clean. Only very minor criticism is that the 30A sites are small, some are head-in and drive out across the grass.  A few of them have the hookups in awkward places.  Not really a problem, just awkward.  Next time I'll ask for a 50A site and pay the extra $3.  A few sites did appear to be long-term tenants, but were very well kept.  Also, while the big fishing pier is still closed, there is a smaller pier across from the MWR office that is open.  Not unusual for the wind to blow every day - this is the coast - hang on to the door when you open it.

2014 - 2015

We stayed in this campground from October 2014 to October 2015 and it was the worst camping experience of our lives. First of all there is more than just "some" homesteading, there is a lot of homesteading. Some of them have been there for 3+ years, and won't be leaving anytime soon.  Even though homesteading is against MWR rules, here it's overlooked because cash is king. Another problem is that if some of these homesteaders don't want you staying here, they will go to unimaginable lengths to drive you out, which is what happened to us. One couple days of women filed false police reports against us, to either embarrass us or cause us to want to leave. Either way the phony allegations were a complete waste of time and resources, which didn't appear to bother them. Another thing they did to us was they placed screws under our tires in hopes of causing damage to our property.  That also didn't work. They walked there dog over to my vehicle and allowed it to urinate on my tires.  Enough became enough and we left. Other problems are most definitely the dog feces, anyone who says otherwise either is blind or is part of the problem of not cleaning up after their pet. Drunk drivers speeding thru the park, crashing into things. People racing around on golf carts and almost hitting a little boy in a wheelchair. The beach is gorgeous if you don't mind kicking the trash out of your way. My husband and I spent hours picking up the trash that littered the beach, which was a daily endeavor.  The pier is a complete mess. Laundry facilities are free, if you dare use them. Some homesteaders appear to think it's their personal laundromat and you take the risk of their wrath if you dare use it.  Garbage cans so full they overflow onto the ground. Mold dripping from the air vents in the bathrooms.  Dumpsters that smell so bad they leave you gagging. People like to throw dead fish in them. Complaints definitely fall on deaf ears. There is a very poor manager and he should be replaced by someone who can handle the job. Others only care about the profits, your safety is of no concern. If you're looking for a drama free stay, I suggest another place. We will never ever stay here again.

Dec 2015

We did not stay here do to the previous comments and didn't want to get drive all the way there in the RV to find that it would not be an enjoyable stay.  However, we drove to the RV park in the car and checked it out.  I also went into the office and had a nice talk with the Manager, Dave.  We didn't go into the bathrooms, but the rest of the park was mowed and clean, can't comment on dog poo. But, having 4 dogs and picking up after each one, I don't like seeing others ignore their duties.  Most sites are double concrete pads and there were a few empty sites.  There does appear to be some homesteading going on, especially in the older Mobile Home park, but most sites looked clean, a few sites were cluttered, but I have seen worse.  The overall appearance looks real good, a lot better than some of the others I have been in.  I really am sorry we didn't come here in the first place.  I believe the previous comments are from a few sour apples and should not be given a whole lot of credit.  The pier is unusable.  Dave was very straight forward with me and seems to care about the park. His staff answered my initial questions with no problems.  I am under the impression that some if not all of the previous problems were taken care of.  I will definitely stay here on our next trip through this area.  It is right on the water and would be well worth the visit.  I also just noticed that the previous 3 reviews were there first time posts. Hmmmm!!! I should have noticed that before now.

Oct 2015

We were traveling back home to Houston from Port Aransas and staying at this famcamp was a last minute decision. After reading some of the previous reviews I decided to add my own. Biggest complaint is the dog poo. My kids were always stepping in it. That really annoys us because we clean up after our dogs. Another issue is the lack of a playground for children. There is absolutely no designated place for kids to play. The cars (and golf carts) that drive through here do not obey the posted speed limits and you take your life in your hands as you walk around. Not a very safe place to walk your pets, or your children. Huge potholes make it difficult to drive through the road. The base itself has the worst streets of any base we've ever been to. WiFi wasn't working. Two dryers in the laundry area were broken and we were told it's been that way for over a year. No air conditioning makes doing laundry a very unhealthy, unpleasant chore. Upside is the base is very close to town, the beach was clean of trash and debris. Pier is destroyed. Facilities are clean and well cared for. Management really doesn't seem to care whether or not you've enjoyed your stay. It's really more of a give-us-your-money-and-go-away type of attitude they seem to have. We found the campground in Kingsville to be so much more family friendly. There is a very bad element here at the NAS famcamp that caused us to leave early. Chances are we won't stay here again.

October 2015

The two words I'd use to describe this camp is "never again"!!! We had a horrible time. People not cleaning up after their pets, dogs roaming around with no leash. One woman screaming and swearing at others using the laundry. I could hear her screaming from several yards away. Then she got in a golf cart and went racing past me and almost hit a little boy in a wheel chair. I did report that to the main office because it was very dangerous. I could not believe what I was witnessing. After speaking to a few of the long termers I found this has been an on going problem for the last few months. WiFi is terrible with thieves ready to steal your info. The pier has been destroyed by storms. Mosquitoes are really bad. I think we'll stay somewhere else next time. This camp is having too many problems. Camp here at your own risk.
