Ft. Pickett is about 4 miles off Va. State rt. 460. Hwy signs are easy to follow. No tricky barriers to worry about; 1 easy to navigate zig-zag was all. (our Chevy ext-cab truck & 27' TT made the turns easily) The folks at the gate told us to ck in w/ the Post police, but they in turn told us to ck in at another bldg. Very nice lady, in what would have been the MWR office back before the RV park went over to the county. Cost - $11. The park is much larger (in capacity) than most guides say. We saw at least 12 RV's already there & spaces for another dozen at least. No bathhouse, restrooms, showers. (Free showers are avail on post if required) The spaces we were directed to were gravel that the grass had grown up over. Made the site very firm and easy to pull on/off. 50/30amp/W/sewer in each space & a lot of room between spaces. Huge, old growth pine trees covered the park and the grounds were closely mowed and well tended. The MWRlady told me that they had several retirees wintering there, some ANG soldiers who were in training and some realcivilians. The signs advertising the RV park don't indicate that the park is open to the public. Most RV park vehicles appeared to be owned by non-civilians. At any rate, the park was graveyard quiet and very peaceful. The Post is still active with ANG military training on-going. It is right out of WWII. Old, long, narrow, white wooden buildings everywhere & ANG soldiers humping it along the roads. The small BX opens at 10:00 and we left before I could ck it out. We would definitely consider coming back for a longer stay sometime. We couldn't this time because we had reservations at Ft. Monroe.
