A no frills facility. Documents received by email were very useful for arriving at the Defense Supply Center Richmond and then finding the RV campground. Water and electric only. Dump station is very near the park with roads for easy access to and from the park. No bath house on site. We were in back-in site #2 which easily accommodated our 43 foot motorhome. There is a nice herd of elk maintained on the DLA Installation as a result of the Government Purchase agreement for the land. You can read more about the facility history here: https://www.dla.mil/Aviation/Installation/History/. I would definitely stay here again.

Not much has changed since JimUSMC reviewed the park with some exceptions. Our reservations paperwork said site #4 was ours but we couldn't determine any site numbers because the small signs are covered by black paint obscurring the little site numbers. So odd. It's like they don't want people to know which site is which. So before just taking one, I drove our tow car down the street to MWR in Bldg 24 and found NO ONE despite wandering all over inside...could not believe the lax security. Called the RV park phone number and we were met back at the park about 10 minutes later. The nice fellow didn't even have our reservation due to employee no longer there (reservation made one year before arrival and confirmation received by email about 8 months later). He gave us pull through Site #6 which turned out to be sloped; after 1 1/2 hours of trying to get level in the 95 degree Virginia heat and humidity we gave up. Sure could have used a bathhouse with showers. But we got our sightseeing done and the large Exchange and Commissary at Fort Lee are only about 30 minutes away.

What a hidden gem this place is. Easy access from I-95 and onto the base. Some barriers to go around but nothing to hinder even a 45' RV with a tow car. Level pull-thru site with water and 50 amp service. Dump station adjacent to the park. This is a very quiet base with no amenities but a great location for visiting the Richmond or Petersburg area.

Great place to stop off on your way up or down the east coast. Proximity to everything, and gravel sites are well maintained. No qualms with the amount, site cleanliness, or dump station. The only think I wish they had there were bathrooms....... but other than that, it was great.

We have a 36' motorhome with toad vehicle. We called a few weeks prior and made a reservation; we were assigned site 5 which is a pull-thru site. The price quoted on the phone was $30/night. The MWR staff e-mailed four documents giving information on location and directions to get in to base. This information was very helpful and utilized as we entered the installation. The gate guard was efficient and told us to remain on G Road, go past the three RV storage lots on the left, and the campground would be the next turn to the left. He was correct. However, there was no signage and of the six sites, none of them were occupied so we almost missed our turn in! Once in, the campground was clean and each site had water and electric (30/50), and a picnic table. The sites are gravel and level. Trash cans are close by, as well as a larger dumpster if needed. They have an RV dump station between the second and third RV storage lots. Finally, we were there for one night only and did not unhook our toad. We dropped payment in a lock box at the campground. We tried calling MWR to use a credit card but no one returned our call. We remained the only campers in the campground and enjoyed a quiet and peaceful evening. We would stay here again and spend more time exploring the elk enclosure and the city of Richmond.

Staying here in our 40 foot RV. Ground is very wet from constant rain but actual pads are graveled and slightly raised so mostly dry. Good power and water. 4 back in sites and 2 pull through sites. Entrance to park is not marked at all, directions are good but if it weren't for the Fire Marshall I would have never found the entrance on the first or second or third pass. Kate at MWR is a jewel and very helpful. Gate guards are friendly and mannered. No commissary or PX. Just a small gas station and very tiny store. Price quoted as $30.00 per night. Good over the air TV and excellent reception for Direct TV.

This is a great place to stop off on the way north or south. There seems to be some discrepancy on the price. It is listed as $35, last year we paid $20 and when I questioned the price on the phone this year I was told $25. No matter, it's still a great park to stop at. The elk are awesome to watch. The PX, although very small, has the necessities and friendly staff. The only concern I have is that someday this park will get to be too popular and we won't have a place to stay on the way through this area. When coming through the gate, some guards are very friendly and then you might get the one who wants to inspect your rig inside and out and to do that he wants all your animals out, two dogs three cats, thats not going to happen. Otherwise, as I said, this is a great place to stop for a night or a week or whatever.

Cost is $35!! Not $20. Really! There is no wifi. There is no on-site sewer but there is a dump station. IMHO, $35 is ridiculous given the lack of basic amenities. There are full hookup CG's in the Richmond area for $45. That's the negatives. A concern for us is that they take reservations but do not mark a site as reserved. If you come in after the office closed it is possible that rigs have come in without reservations and have taken all sites not knowing that some were reserved. With the office closed you have no recourse. Didn't see it happen but it easily could if the place gets more popular. Positives: It is convenient to 95. Folks are very nice both in the office and the gate. Fairly quiet even if there is a rail line nearby. Physical layout is as described by others. During our stay there were 2 other rigs.

The cost for this park is only $20 and not $35 as stated above. When you come into the back gate, go straight about 1/2 mile. You will see a huge anchor on the left and a fighter jet on the right. Slow down and the park is after the storage lot on the left. Spaces 1 and 2 are smaller back in spots. 3 and 4 are longer back ins. 5 and 6 are very long pull thru. We are 69' and fit nicely in #3. I would have rated it with straight 5's, but the absence of sewer is a issue for those of us that don't want to mess with dumping. There is a dump station conveniently located next to the park. We will defiantly stay here again if we are in the area. Office staff is helpful but not located near the park. Really nice walking/bike path that runs pass the park.

Overnight stay heading north.  Reservation process went well, with a call back.  Quiet campground, as others have said.  Lots of standing water after several days of rain, but sites are raised gravel.  Recommend, especially if you're looking for something convenient and inexpensive.

Visited the campground for an overnight stop over. It had rained days prior to getting here, the ground was very soft and wet but the pads are raised on pea gravel, hard and level. Had 5 bars of 4G on AT&T network. Not much more to say that already been said, except it can get very cold at night in the winter here, 25 degrees overnight. Glad I was still winterized, no restroom facility in campground.

Great campground and ammenitites. Everything was in great shape and all the camp sites are upgraded to 50 amp. Grounds are mowed and well taken care of. We camped in the older section and loved it. Spaces have plenty of distance between neighbors except for the double sites. Whole campground has upgraded to a new wifi that is excellent. I can't believe I'd ever say that about military campground wifi but the Navy broke the code on it. They do it right at this campground. Love this place. The new office person (Angela) is excellent. She called the day we were to arrive just to make sure our plans had not changed. What a refreshing difference from most other campgrounds. She is great. They offer daily, weekly and monthly rates which is fantastic. We will stay here again.

This is a jewel. Very quiet, easy access, people all over the base are very nice. Called and made reservation. Got in, picked a spot then called to say we were here and what spot we had taken. Asked about getting small portable grill inspected and where to take it. Woman said just wait and I'll send someone over. FD Rep came over and said, there is no need to have it inspected. There is a misconception by MET to get things inspected. You can grill, use the fire pit, etc, no problem. $20's is not high, just paid $42 at VA state park with no available OTA (got out here), avg cell service, (full bars LTE here) not close to much (dntwn Richmond just minutes away). All for 1/2 the cost of a state park. Very quiet, did I mention that!?! Small convenience store, no diesel on base but easily obtained off base. Sorta strange dump setup but perfectly adequate. Definitely will stay here again.

Stopped for two nights in a motorhome. Water and good 50 amps only. No other facilities, with two pull throughs and 4 back ins. It so convenient to I95 that it works great for us. There is a money drop box or you can call MWR during normal working hours. In past years we were the only ones here. This place must have been discovered. When we got here Friday there was one other rig here. By Sunday morning all 6 spots were filled with one rig arriving at 2300 last night.

B.O. left this review using the Directory Software: We stay here because we have family in Richmond but have been lucky not to have stayed during inclement weather in the past. There was quite a bit of rain during our last stay, but there were also some obvious drainage problems. Only two of us were at the campground and the other camper had to move. Our site was probably the best one and you can see the electric pole sitting in a puddle of water!
The gate staff is professional and the registration is easy; but for just electric and water, $20 is high for a military campground with 6 sites and absolutely nothing else (well, there is a little shoppette and a few moose in an enclosure somewhere on site. :-)) When we had the wet weather issues we felt we needed to let others know, just to be fair.

We stayed for four nights while on our way to Florida from New Jersey. I echo the other reviews listed below. The site is very clean and well kept. There are no sewer hookup but the dump site is close and easily accessible. No cable or Wifi, but we picked up all the local broadcast in HD with our over the air antenna and the Verizon signal was five bars, so no concern there. The base is very quiet and the fact we were the only people at the park made it even more so. If you're looking for a nice, quiet out of the way place, I highly recommend it. When coming in the back gate we asked for directions to the park and were told it was located all the way down on the left, can't miss it. Not quite. If you are looking for it, there are no signs, but once you see the second RV storage lot on your left, you're there.

We stayed here while doing genealogy research at the Library of Virginia, only 8 miles away in downtown. The campground was nice and the layout provided easy access. There are 2 pull-thrus for the larger vehicles and the dump station was in close proximity with easy access. There is not much there in the way of amenities because of the mission of the base mostly civilians. A little shopette with a filling station and carwash. However, the campground was clean and well maintained. During our visit, we were visited by fireman and told too evacuate because of a tornado warning. They moved us, and our dogs, to a shelter. The police also came to make sure we evacuated. The next day, the Assistant Fire Chief stopped by to make sure we were okay and that his folks took care of us. I thought it great that the base had this plan in effect and that campers were not left out. Kudo's. I will stay there again when I'm in the area.

We stayed here a a couple of days on a trip to the Northeast. Electric & water hookups with good underused little dump station. The campground was easy enough to find after coming through the gate but I thought I was going the wrong way when I started in, looked more like an alley than a road going into the gate. There are 6 sites 2 are pull through and the others are back in. The back in sites have the water & power posts near the front side of the site which could be a problem with short cords and water lines. No sewer, cable or WIFI and very little of anything on base. There is a small shoppete which also sells gas, NO DIESEL. The campground was very quiet, clean with only one other camper there during our stay. The site we were on was fairly level we used only one inch under the tires on one side to level up. Very little shade around the campground and none around the sites. Nice screened gazebo with lights inside and out. No using your own grill without getting it inspected by the fire dept., there are 3 firepit type grills there with fire extinguishers right next to them. They obviously take fires very serious. There is a paved bike/walk path that runs beside the road from the gate past the CG to the pond and picnic area. If you continue past the gas station/pond and picnic area toward the main gate there is a small canteen on the left and the area housing the Elk is on the right. I missed the Elk on the first bike ride to this area so the next time I walked the same route and saw the large enclosure with the Elk just past a nice workout trail. For $20 a night I expected a little more but the location was good for me. We will use this facility again when in the Richmond area.

We stayed here a week in July 2014 while visiting family. E/W hookups with well-maintained dump station a few hundred yards away (behind a small brick building which sits between the two RV storage areas - turn at Elk Grove Rd. and you should see the itty bitty sign showing a trailer). Campground was easy to find. We paid by check so went to Travel Office to check in and pay (it is next to the Fitness Center). The staff stayed after 5 when we called and told them we were on site and on our way. (There was also a drop box for those overnighting who could not get to the office). Everyone we encountered was extremely courteous and friendly. Campground was quiet, clean. We did use our jacks and pads, but our site was not terribly off level. There was only one other camper there the entire week so appears it is underutilized. A couple of sites were pull through which we appreciated. No shaded RV spots, although two of the corner spots had some shade area for picnic table. Two fire rings were set in center of the campground for group use I guess. Very small Shoppette with gas (a little high we thought); we did use the car wash located behind. Plenty of fast foods outside of gate. Convenient to Richmond-Petersburg metro area, but read the directions very carefully! We turned right instead of left when coming from south and ended up having to back up rig and toad in a dead-end/apartment complex entrance. Not pretty. BTW: We never saw the aforementioned wildlife – elk or other. However, photos on the Web site show an open forested area that now appears to be fenced off. Te price of $20 did seem a little high given the lack of amenities, especially when compared to our next stop – a COE site with E/W alongside a beautiful lake with swimming, fishing, etc. for $12 a night with our America Beautiful Senior Pass. But Richmond is a big city area with high cost of living to match, so I suspect it is that "location, location, location" idea. Private campground further up I-95 with full hookups was in the $50-60 range, so this was still a bargain for us since we were primarily sleeping and eating breakfast at the site. Will definitely stay again.

Our first visit to this location. Overall it was good. When coming on post in your RV follow the directions, they work. When approaching the gate, it splits for auto/commercial and truck. We used the commercial lane as it was not clear which gate an RV or bus should use. The security guard informed us that we should have used the other one, but it was better to use this one as it is wider. He checked our ID and directed us to the RV sites. They are only 1/2 mile from the gate, on the left. It is located just beyond the RV/boat storage areas. Our check-in consisted of calling the same number we made reservations at. Our check-out was the same. We pulled in, picked a site and made the call. No problems. There is a very small shoppette with snack items and alcohol. There is a gas station on base. There are fire pits and extinguishers on site for grilling. Your grill must be inspected before use, so don't plan on using it. No sewer hookups but a dump station is close by. The sites were deep gravel which is not level, so you will want to use some jack pads. There are no facilities, but we knew that. It makes a great place visit the Richmond area. They do have a gym, which we did not use. The base becomes a ghost town after duty hours.
